Visions of the Ordinary was a public installation erected in the Klingenpark, Zurich, during Design Week September 2025. Conceived by Swiss artist Tobias Brunner and realised together with the Bureau Brunner team — Rachel, Martin and Claus — the work came to life through close collaboration and the generous support of loyal friends and sponsors.
May this spaceHistorically, a temple has always been a dedicated space where the divine and the ordinary intersect. This installation is intended as a space that brings spiritual wisdom into the midst of the everyday. In contemplating this installation space, my aim was to create an environment that actively encourages reflection on what is sacred in the ordinary.
I envisioned a binal structure accompanied by provoking visuals, prompting visitors to consider where and how the divine intersects with their everyday experience. As for the structure, it would consist of two ordinary building materials. First off, form-work panels, normally used to pour concrete for infrastructures, and second, white building-wall panels, another common material, used to barricade construction sites, both being commonly overlooked everyday materials.
As for the message, 28 prints encompass the installation, with each of the 28 prints representing a name of God found in the Torah and or Bible – two of the oldest books that have marked our Western civilization like no other. I was drawn to reframe how these names could be interpreted today, because most of them are composed in an ordinary manner. It suggests that the extraordinary might be hidden in the ordinary things we encounter every day.
Going through the names, I realized they are all speaking of passionate love, and love as a simple gesture, not a love requiring something in return.

As you stand in this installation, I would challenge you to go through each name and to see which pulls you in, and my wish was and is to see what these individual interpretations of names could awaken in us all. – Tobias

Visions of the Ordinary war eine öffentliche Installation im Klingenpark in Zürich während der Design Week im September 2025. Konzipiert vom Schweizer Künstler Tobias Brunner und realisiert zusammen mit dem Zürcher Team von Bureau Brunner — Rachel, Martin und Claus — entstand das Werk durch enge Zusammenarbeit und die grosszügige Unterstützung treuer Freund:innen und Sponsor:innen.
Möge dieser RaumHistorisch gesehen war ein Tempel immer ein geweihter Ort, an dem das Göttliche und das Alltägliche aufeinandertreffen. Diese Installation soll ein Raum sein, der spirituelle Weisheit in den Alltag bringt. Bei der Konzeption dieses Installationsraums war es mein Ziel, eine Umgebung zu schaffen, die aktiv zum Nachdenken darüber anregt, was im Alltäglichen heilig ist.
Die Struktur wird begleitet von provokativen Bildern, die die Besucher dazu anregen, darüber nachzudenken, wo und wie das Göttliche mit ihrer Alltagserfahrung zusammentrifft. Die Struktur besteht aus zwei gewöhnlichen Baumaterialien. Zum einen Schalungsplatten, die normalerweise zum Giessen von Beton für Infrastrukturen verwendet werden, und zum anderen weisse Bauwandplatten, ein weiteres gängiges Material, das zum Absperren von Baustellen verwendet wird. Beide Materialien sind alltägliche Materialien, die häufig übersehen werden.
Die Installation umfasst 28 Bilder, wobei jedes der 28 Bilder einen Namen Gottes aus der Thora und/oder der Bibel darstellt – zwei der ältesten Bücher, die unsere westliche Zivilisation wie keine anderen geprägt haben. Ich war daran interessiert, wie diese Namen heute interpretiert werden können, da die meisten von ihnen auf gewöhnliche Weise zusammengesetzt sind. Für mich ein klares Indiz dafür, dass das Ausserordentliche in den gewöhnlichen Dingen verborgen ist, denen wir jeden Tag begegnen.
Als ich die Namen durchging, wurde mir klar, dass sie alle von leidenschaftlicher Liebe sprechen, und zwar von Liebe als einer einfachen Geste, nicht als einer Liebe, die eine Gegenleistung verlangt.

Wenn Sie in dieser Installation stehen, möchte ich Sie dazu auffordern, jeden Namen durchzugehen und zu sehen, welcher Sie am meisten anspricht. Mein Wunsch war und ist es, zu sehen, was diese individuellen Interpretationen von Namen in uns allen wecken könnten. – Tobias
